In TutorRev, our first reward mechanism centers around stars, designed to encourage accurate reading and continuous improvement. Children use TutorRev’s virtual library, curated to match their abilities, to select and read books aloud. As they read each page, the system instantly analyzes their pronunciation and decoding accuracy. Words on the screen are repainted in different colors to give children immediate, critical feedback: green for correct words, red for substitutions, orange for mispronunciations, and gray strikethrough for omissions. Based on the percentage of green words on the page, students are awarded 1 to 5 stars. This clear visual feedback motivates children to listen to the model speaker, focus on words that aren’t green, and learn how to pronounce them correctly. The desire to earn more stars encourages students to try again and improve, creating a virtuous cycle of learning.
